This type of footed ampulla (holy water flask) is typical of French or Burgundian examples. Many ampullae relate to Marian devotion, with both of the symbols used on this example being associated with the Virgin Mary. The letter A is probably for ‘Ave’ (the opening of the Angelic Salutation) while the hexafoil or six pointed flower on the reverse is frequently associated with the Virgin Mary and probably derives from one of her most important attributes, the lily flower. The lily was a symbol of purity and is often shown in art being offered by the Archangel Gabriel to Mary. Both symbols are therefore linked to the Annunciation. The original was found in Ypres.

Hollow and fitted with a simple leather stopper (easily removed if not required).
